Fillers Q & A
What are dermal fillers?
As you age, your face loses volume and tone. This loss is due to a decreased production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, two components that give skin elasticity, strength, and moisture.
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectable solutions that your provider uses to restore volume to your skin. They’re key players in the fight against aging for their ability to plump sagging skin and fill in fine lines and wrinkles.
What do dermal fillers treat?
Your provider makes injections into targeted areas on your face and neck. Dermal fillers are popular and widely used to:
- Reduce acne scarring
- Improve skin tone and texture
- Make lips fuller
- Diminish wrinkles and fine lines
- Minimize scars
- Plump sunken skin
- Tighten sagging skin
- Volumize hollow cheeks
In addition to your face, your provider also uses dermal fillers to add volume to hands and feet.
What dermal fillers are available?
All Island Dermatology has an extensive catalog of dermal fillers, including:
- Juvederm® Ultra
- Juvederm Volbella
- Juvederm Vollure
- Juvederm Voluma
- Restylane®
- Restylane Silk
- Restylane Lyft
- Restylane Refine
- Restylane Defyne
- Radiesse®
- Belotero®
- Sculptra®
Depending on your goals and skin condition, your provider helps guide you to the fillers that will achieve the best results.
Does it hurt to get a dermal filler?
Comfort and safety are the highest priority for the team at All Island Dermatology. You’ll get an anesthetic to numb your skin before your filler injection.
While it’s possible that you may feel a sting or pinch, the procedure is tolerated well by most patients. For a day or two after you get your filler, your face may swell or look bruised. Don’t worry, this is normal and quickly dissipates on its own. To help reduce the swelling, you can apply ice on and off after your procedure. You also can apply Revision Vitamin K 2-3 times daily to any bruises to speed up the healing process.
How long do the results last?
Results vary from person to person, but generally, you can expect to see Juvederm improvements for up to 18 months depending on the area, since some fillers last longer depending on the placement. Specific Juvederm products like Voluma and Volbella provide benefits for up to two years. When the effects wear off in a year or two, you can safely repeat the procedure at one of the All Island Dermatology offices in Garden City or Glen Cove, New York.
