What are glycolic peels?

Glycolic peels are a type of chemical peel treatment with glycolic acid as the main component. Glycolic acid is a natural acid found in sugarcane that gently removes the rough surface layer of your skin to reveal a fresh layer of skin below.

How does a glycolic peel improve my skin?

In removing the top layer of your skin, a glycolic peel removes or reduces skin damage to make you look younger and fresh-faced. Glycolic peels can reduce or eliminate your:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Roughness
  • Dryness
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Discoloration

To see the best results, you’ll likely need a glycolic peel once every two weeks for about three months. After this, the results of each peel last for about a month and you can book maintenance appointments as needed.

What should I expect at my glycolic peel appointment?

When you first arrive, your provider may give you a topical numbing cream or a mild sedative. The peel is gentle, so these aren’t always necessary for a comfortable treatment.

Next, your provider covers your face with a thin layer of the glycolic acid solution. They leave it on your face for a few minutes. The length of time that the solution rests on your face depends on the condition of your skin and your aesthetic goals.

You may feel a slight stinging sensation as the peel does its work. Once the peel is removed, you’re free to leave the office.

What should I expect after my glycolic peel?

Glycolic peels are gentle and require little to no recovery time. After each appointment, your skin may feel slightly irritated for 24 hours or less.

To reduce the irritation, your provider at All Island Dermatology gives you instructions to care for your skin as it heals. They may recommend that you use:

  • Sunblock
  • Cold compresses
  • Moisturizers
  • Water sprays or mists

Your provider may also give you a mild pain-reliever to reduce any discomfort. After your appointment, you’re free to go about the rest of your day without taking extra time to recover.

If you want a beautiful new tone and texture for your skin without serious risks or complications, call All Island Dermatology or book a consultation online to learn more about gentle glycolic peels.
